There are two versions of the origin of madeleine, the best-known being that in 1755, at the Château de Commercy, Madeleine Paulmier, a servant, saved the reception of the Duke of Lorraine, Stanislas Leszczynski, by hastily preparing a recipe held by her grandmother. A resounding success, the duke decided to name the cakes Madeleine in his honor, and the town of Commercy became the world capital of Madeleine cakes. .
